ANDERSON, JAMES ( ? –1809)

In the medical service of the E. I. Co. : served in Madras : appointed Assistant Sturgeon, 1765 : Surgeon, 1786; Member of the Madras Medical Board, 1800 : a distinguished botanist : worked at developing the cochineal dye, and introducing the cultivation of silk : wrote for some years on sugarcane, the coffee-plant, cotton, and the apple : died Aug. 5, 1809.
