I.C.S.: born 1841: son of Professor Baden Powell of Oxford: educated at St. Paul's School: in the Civil Service in the Panjab, 1861–89: served in the Indian Forest Department: was an authority on Indian land tenures: for some years a Judge of the Chief Court of the Panjab: wrote Land Systems of British India, The Indian Village Community: helped to establish the Lahore University: M.A. Oxford, 1894: C.I.E.: died Jan. 2, 1901.
