CLARKE, TREDWAY (1764–1858)

General : entered the E. I. Co.'s military service in 1780 : on arriving in Madras was engaged in the war against Hyder Ali : wounded at the storming of Chillumbram : in command of the Artillery at Fort St. George from 1783 : under General Medows and Lord Cornwallis in the fighting with Tippoo in 1790–2, including Bangalore, Seringapatam, Pondicherry and the hill-forts : from 1798, Head Commissary of Ordnance at Fort St. George : returned to England in 1811 : offered the command of the Artillery at Madras in 1820 : prevented by ill-health from accepting it : died in 1858.
