MELLON, ALFRED (1820–1867), musician, born in Birmingham, 17 April 1820, became a violinist in the opera and other orchestras, and subsequently leader of the ballet at the Royal Italian Opera, Covent Garden. He held at a later date the post of musical director at the Haymarket and Adelphi Theatres, and afterwards of the Pyne and Harrison English opera company, by whom his opera ‘Victorine’ was produced at Covent Garden in 1859. He was conductor of the Musical Society, and also of a series of promenade concerts given under his name at Covent Garden. In 1865 he became conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society, and dying 27 March 1867, was buried in Brompton cemetery. He married Miss Woolgar, the well-known actress. He was an excellent musician.
