Death of Rev. Patrick MacSweeney, M.A.

Rev. Patrick MacSweeney, M.A., Professor of English at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, died yesterday, after a brief illness. He was aged 62.

Deceased was the editor of the "Irish Ecclesiastical Record." He taught for some time in Clonliffe College.

His brothers are Rev. Michael MacSweeney, Aughrim St., Dublin; Rev. Eugene MacSweeney, and Mr. Joseph MacSweeney, a teacher in U.C.D.

The late Fr. MacSweeney was born in 1873, being a son of the late Mr. J. J. MacSweeney, library clerk of the Royal Irish Academy. He was educated in the Christian Brothers' Schools, North Richmond St.; Holy Cross College, Clonliffe; and U.C.D., where he secured his M.A. and the Chancellor's gold medal for English prose. Lecturer in English

and French Literature in University College and Loreto College, Dublin, and was later a Professor in Holy Cross College. He also acted as Examiner in English to the Intermediate Board of Education, and in English, Irish, and Irish History to U.C.D.

Fr. MacSweeney devoted his attention chiefly to the study of English literature and Middle Irish saga. amongst his publications were:—"Love of Nature in English Poetry"; The Martial Career of Conghal—a Middle Irish saga"; and "A Group of Nation Builders." He also contributed papers on Irish poets of the 18th century ad other articles to various periodicals, and was one of the contributors to the "Catholic Encyclopaedia." He was a corresponding member of the Societe Archeologique de France.
