Help:Sidenotes
Works with extensive sidenotes cannot be transcribed exactly as they appear in printed scans (due to technical limitations of the wiki format).
This page details how to transcribe them, so that they will be recognised and rendered in appropriate manner when Mediawiki is able to fully support them.
Sidenotes in the Page namespace
editIn some instances they can be omitted, for example chapter headings to aid navigation which would not be relevant if the text is presented in an unpaged form. To include these for completeness use: {{sideheadered-page}} in the header portion of the Page: concerned. This will not display in main-space or on transclusion.
For a book with sidenotes, each page in the Page namespace that has sidenotes should have {{sidenotes begin}}
in the header and {{sidenotes end}}
in the footer. The easiest way to achieve this is to add these templates to the default header and footer in the Index page.
In a physical book, sidenotes are printed on the outside edge of a page. This should be copied in the Page namespace, by using the templates {{outside L}} for sidenotes on the left and {{outside RL}} for sidenotes on the right. Alternatively use {{left sidenote}} for sidenotes on the left and {{right sidenote}} for sidenotes on the right.
Sidenotes in the main namespace
editThe following table details what sidenotes will look like in the main namespace in each of the dynamic layouts.
outside templates | sidenote templates | |
---|---|---|
Layout 1 (default) |
display beyond the left margin | display in a box in the left hand side of the text |
Layout 2 | left justified in the left margin | right justified in the left margin |
Layout 3 | display beyond the left margin | left justified in a grey box in the right margin |
If using the "outside" templates, you will need to add {{default layout|Layout 2}}
to each main-namespace page containing sidenotes in order for them to display correctly.
If using the "sidenote" templates, you can choose the layout you prefer.
