SCOTT M. LADD was born at Sharon in the State of Wisconsin on the 22d of June, 1855. His early education was acquired in Sharon Academy after which he entered Beloit College, remaining two years, then entered Carthage College where he graduated in 1879. He took the law course in the Iowa State University, finishing in 1881. Locating at Sheldon in O'Brien County, Iowa, in that year, he entered upon the practice of his profession and in 1886 was nominated on the Republican ticket for District Judge of the Fourth Judicial District and elected, entering upon the duties of that office in January following. He was twice reëlected, serving until January 1, 1897. At the Republican State Convention of 1896 he was nominated for Judge of the Supreme Court and was elected over Lemuel R. Bolter, the Fusion candidate, by a plurality of 64,377. The same year, the degree of LL. D. was conferred upon Judge Ladd by Carthage College. He entered upon the duties of Supreme Judge on the 1st of January, 1897.
