Marischal Coll. and Univ. of Aberdeen, educated at Haileybury, entered Bengal civil service 1857, successively assistant commissioner, deputy commissioner, and commissioner in the Punjab, a student of Lincoln's Inn 19 April, 1869 (then aged 30), called to the bar 26 Jan., 1871 (only son of George Elsmie, Esq., late of Southampton, dec.); born 31 Oct., 1838; married , 1861, Elizabeth, dau. of late Thomas Spears, Esq.
