Grove, (Hon.) Sir William Robert, D.C.L., LL.D., F.R.S., a justice of the High Court of Justice (Queen's Bench Division) since 1879, knighted 21 Feb., 1872, M.A., Brasenose Coll., Oxon, 1833, D.C.L. (hon.) 1875, LL.D. (hon.) Camb. 1879, member of royal commission on patents 1864, commissioner for Oxford Univ., a justice of Court of Common Pleas 1871–5, of High Court of Justice 1875–8, author of The Correlation of Physical Forces, etc., royal medallist 1847, president of British Association 1866, was leader of the South Wales and Western circuit, a student of Lincoln's Inn 11 Nov., 1831 (then aged 20), called to the bar 24 Nov., 1835, Q.C. , 1853 (only son of John Grove, Esq., of Swansea, co. Glamorgan); born 11 July, 1811; married 27 May, 1837, Emma Maria, dau. of John Diston Powles, Esq.; she died 8 March, 1879.
