Lace-Bark Tree.
Native Name:—Whau-whau.
A small tree, 15 to 25 ft. high, common in the mountain forests of the South Island, especially by the sides of streams. It has a graceful, spreading mode of growth, fine bold foliage, and exceedingly handsome large white flowers, and is altogether one of the most handsome and noteworthy trees found in the Colony. The bark is remarkably tough, and is often used by the bushman as a substitute for rope. (Cheeseman). It flowers in January. Otira Gerge.
