Thomas à Becket and/or David T. Shaw

It is believed that Thomas a'Becket wrote the song at the request of David Shaw, c. 1843. Shaw later published the song under his own name, but a'Becket maintained that he was the sole author of the song.

There is also some controversy whether this song is an adaptation of "Britannia, the Pride of the Ocean", or whether the latter is an adapation of this song. Both songs are also known by the title "The Red, White and Blue".
