This hymn was originally published in Church Times on 15 October 1865, with the title "Hymn for Procession with Cross and Banners". This publication was set to a tune from the third movement of Franz Joseph Haydn's Symphony no. 15 in D Major, but the hymn is now usually sung to the tune "St. Gertrude" by Arthur Seymour Sullivan
