Industries and Trade.—According to the annual report for 1898 of the chief inspector of factories (1900), the number of persons employed in factories and worshops in 1897 was 4690, as compared with 5359 in 1896. Non-textile factories employed 3379 persons, workshops 1150, the majority being engaged in the clothing industries. The total number of persons employed in connexion with mines and quarries in 1899 was 11,138.
