TO THE SOLDIERS ON BOTH SIDES WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE FOUR YEARS' WAR, 1861-1865, EACH FIGHTING FOR WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS RIGHT, AND ALSO TO THOSE WHO, AFTER HOSTILITIES CEASED, GAVE THEIR BEST ENDEAVORS TO PROMOTE PEACE AND HARMONY BETWEEN THE SECTIONS LATELY IN ARMS, THIS WORK IS RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED, NOT TO PERPETUATE THE RECORD OF THE STRIFE, BUT IN TOKEN OF THOSE BETTER FEELINGS WHICH HAVE SINCE REUNITED THE PEOPLE OF ALL SECTIONS UNDER ONE FLAG, WITH ONE HOPE AND ONE DESTINY, IN A UNION OF STATES THAT IS INDISSOLUBLE.
