ברח (b. h.; בר, v. ברר) 1) to break through, pass through (Ex. XXXVI, 33). Denom. בריח. -- 2) to fee. Erub. 13b הגדולה מן הבורח he who fees office. Y. Yeb. XIII, 13a, a. e. וכ׳ ג׳ מן ברח shun three things. Y. Taan. IV, 69b top, v. Zבק; a. fr. Hif. הבריח 1) to cause to flee, drive out, exclude. Y. Yeb. XV, 15a top מנכסיו להבריחו to force him to fee and abandon his property. Y. Gitt. V, 47a עצמו מבריח אדם השבועה מן one will try to shirk the responsibilities of a guardian on account of the oath (which the court asks of him) but one will not do so on account of pay- ment (to which he may eventually be subjected, v. Tosaf. to B. Kam. 39b). -- 2) to abstract, steal, defraud. B. Kam. 113a המכס את ה׳ to smuggle. Y. Keth. VI, beg. 30c וכ׳ משל מברחת תחא שלא that she should not take stealth- ily something which belongs to her husband. Hof. הוברח to be chased, scattered. Lam. R. to I, 21 וכ׳ ענני הוברחו the clouds of glory were withdrawn (R. Hash. 3a נסתלקו).
ברח ch. same. Af. אברח as preced. Hif., to withhold. B. Kam. 88b מניה לנכסיה לאברוחינהו in order to withhold his property from &c., i. e. to disinherit. thpe. אתברח to be driven of, withheld. Targ. Job VI, 13 (h. text נדחה).
ברחא m. (ברח, v. ברח 1)) [one that breaks through, cmp. Mic. II, 13;] leader df the flock (h. עתוד), bell-wether, buck. Y. B. Kam. ברי I, ברא (b. h.; בר, v. ברר) 1) to hollow out, perforate, v. Hif a. ברה. - 2) to think out, plan (cmp. בדא, חקק); to create. Snh. 38b when the Lord wanted וכ׳ את לבראות to create man. Gen. R. s. 8 ואח״כ . . . שב׳ בראו for He first created all the means of his support and then created him (Adam); a. v. fr. ----Part. act. בורא q. v. -- Part. pass. ברוא, f ברואה. Gen. R. s. 44 (ref. to Is. IV, 5 וברא) וכ׳ ב׳ היא כבר it (the futurity) is already created and prepared. Nif. נברא to be created. Ib. s. 8 יברא אל let him not be created. Snh. 38a; a. v. fr. Hif. הבריא 1) (denom. of בר) to come outside, bore, perforate. VIII, 26a וכ׳ עלוי ליביה דאברי מכיון since his heart (passion) became so strong over him as to do this (or דאברי Af. he allowed his passion to become so strong &c.). -- 3) (v. בר I, ברא) to grow wild. Nidd. 50b (explain. the expression ברא תרנגול used by a scholar) ממרה דאיבראי (==שמרדה) that became too wild (uncon- trollable) to her owner.
