ברך (b. h.; בר, v. ברר, ברי) 1) to cave out. Denom. ברכה, ברך; cmp. בורכא, בורכתא. - 2) (cmp. ברר) to select, point out (cmp. esp. Gen. II, 3) whence to bless (Pi.). --- Part. pass. ברוך chosen, blessed, praised. הוא ב׳ הקדוש (abbr. הקב״ה) the Holy One, blessed be He. Pes. 118a; a. v. fr. ברכה f. (b. h.; ברך) 1) blessing, bestowal of pros- perity, good wishes, choice, plenty. Keth. 5a . . . הואיל לדגים ב׳ because on it the blessing was given to the fish (Gen. I, 22, to be fruitful). Y. ib. I, beg. 24d ב׳ כתיב אין וכ׳ the blessing (Gen. II, 3) refers not to man but to the day. --Erub. 63b, a. fr. ב׳ עליו תבא blessing rest upon him (he acts rightly). Keth. 103a; B.
