זקיתא f. (זקק) [the transparent one. cmp. זבוגא,] chameleon (v. Sm. Ant. s. v.). Sn. 108b ed. (Ms. M. זקותא, Ms. F. רקיתא); Yalk. Gen. 59 (some ed. רקיתא). [Mus. derives our w. fr. זיקא, cmp. זוקאנא, the chameleon being believed to live on air.]
זקן I (b. h.) [to be thin, shrunk, hard,] to be old. Gen. R. s. 48 (ref. to Gen. XVIII, 13) מלעשות זקנתי ואני וכ׳ am I (the Lord) too old to do wonders? Hif. הזקין 1) to grow old. Snh. 100b וכ׳ שמא הזקינה when she arrives at old age, he is afraid lest &c. Erub. 56a וכ׳ בחצי מזקינים they age in the middle of ttheir days (prematurely). Sabb. 152a שמזקינין זמן כל the older they grow; a. fr. -- 2) to moke old, consider old (feeble). Gen. R. s. 48 חביריכם ומזקינים . . . אתם you consider each himself young, and each his partner old (Yalk. ib. 82 ומז׳ אדניכם and believe your Lord too old [to do wonders)); v. supra. Nif. נזקן, Nithpa. נזדן 1) to become old, weak, frail. Y. Ber. IX, end 14c (ref. to prov. XXIII, 22) נזדקנה אם וכ׳ אומתך if thy nation is decaying (in faith), stand up and fence her in (prevent her being trodden upon); Yalk. Prov. 960. -- 2) (cmp. דקדק) to be maturely considered, be clear (beyond doubt); -3) (cmp. קשיש) to be hard, diffl- cult. Tosef. Snh. VII, 7 (the presiding judge declares) הדין נזקן (ניזקן) ed. Zuck. (Var. נזדקן, נזדקק); discussed in Snh. 42a הדין נזד׳ מאי what does niedakken mean? Does it mean דינא קש the case is hard (difficult, so as to demand a reconsideration)? . . . . It means דינא חכם the case is clear; Y. Snh. V, end, 23a.
זקן ch. same. Af. אזקן 1) to make old, weaken. Erub. 56a מולייתא הני אזקנון . . those ascents . . . made us (me) old, v. ביראי. --- 2) to grow old. Nidd. 47a לה אזקנא (some ed. אזקונא, Asherl אזקנה) this would be a sign that she has entered old age (passed the change of life).
זקן II m. (b. h.; preced.) 1) old man. Gen. R. s. 39, opp. בחור. Y. Bicc. III, 65c bot. ז׳ עמידת (Yalk. Lev. 670 ז׳ מצות) the duty of standing up before an old man. Hag. 14a; a. fr. -- 2) elder, judge, scholar. Ib. (ref. to Is. III, 2) וכ׳ שראוי זה ז׳ עaken means one fit to sit in col- lege sessions. Ber. 8b וכ׳ ששכח ז׳ a scholar who forgot what he had learned, &c., v. אונס. Kidd. 32b אלא ז׳ אין חכם under tsaken (Lev. XIX, 32) a scholar is meant; Sifra K'dosh. Par. 3 ch. זקן m. (b. h.; cmp. דקן) beard, hair-covered spot. Ber. 11a וכ׳ זקנך thy beard is &c., v. נדל. Snh. VIII, 116sb) וכ׳ התחתון ז׳ שיקיף עד until he grows a beard, by which is meant the hair of tthe genitals &c.; a. fr. -- Pl. זקנים. Lev. R. s. 3.
זקנה f. (b. h.; זקן) old age; frailty. Ber. 39a אין ׳ כאן is there not (the claim of) old age here -- Sabb. 152a עליו קופצת ז׳ frailty of old age will overtake him (pre- maturely). B. זקף (b. h.) 1) to join, put together, put up, erect, restore (to proper pposition). Bets. II, 6 וכ׳ זוקפין אין you must not set up (put together the links of) a lamp on a. Holy Day (v. ib. 22a). M. Kat. 27a וכ׳ זוקפין מאימתי from what time on the eve of the Sabbath are the mourners couches put up again? Ab.
