חרופה f. (v. חרף) 1) designated, betrothed. Kidd. 6a וכ׳ חרופתי האומר if one says to a woman, Be my hdrufah, she is betrothed, for in Judea they call the betrothed (ארוסה) hairufah. -- Esp. ח׳ שפחה (v. Lev. XIX, 20) a handbmaid designated to become the wife of one selected by her master. Gitt. 43a ח׳ שפחה איזוהי (Ker. II, 5 only שפחה) what is the legal condition meant in the law con- cerning the designated handmaid?-- Tosef. Ker. I, 19 אשם ח׳ ש׳ the sacrifice due for sleeping with an engaged hand- maid. חרוץ m. (b. h.; חרץ) one having an abnormal in- cision or cavity on his body (Lev. XXII, 22). Bekh. 41a עצם במקום ח׳ having the depression in a bone, במקום ח׳ בשר in a feshy part. V. חריץ.
חרורא m. (חור, v. חיורוריא; cmp. P. Sm. 1226, sq. s. v. חור) dagzling the eye, deceiver. - Pl. חרורין, constr. חרורי (חרו׳), with עיינין. Targ. Y. I Deut. XVIII, 10 (Y. II ed. Amst. חרודי, corr. acc.); ib. 14 (h. text מענן, derived fr. עון, v. Snh. 65b quot. s. v. זכורו). [Targ. Y. Lev. XIX, 28 עיינין סנהדרין אחורי ולא, read; עיינין חרורי ולא, the word סנהדרין being a glossator's reference to Snh. l. c.]

חרורי m. (חור II) one belonging to the class, having the status, of freedmen. Kidd. IV, 1.
m. pl. (v. preced.) claims of liberation from חרורי slavery. Gitt. 86a (in a formula of sale of a slave) ופטיר וכ׳ ח׳ מן ועטיר and is free and guarded from any claims of liberation.

חרות I m. 1) (הרת, sec. r. of חרה, v. חריה) dried up by heat, shrunk. Succ. 32a top פסול ח׳ if the palm-branch is dried up, it is unft for use; לח׳ דומה if it only looks as if dried up (blackish) &c. -- Pem. חרותה. Hull. III, 2 שמים בידי ח׳ if the animal's lungs are shrunk (wood- like) through an accident; ib. 55b אדם בידי ח׳ by violence done to it. Tosef. ib. חרותא f. ch. (preced.)= h. הריה, a dried-up twig, hardened palm-twig, opp. כפות fexible. Succ. 32a. B. Bath. 161b; Gitt. 36, a. e. ח׳ צייר drew a palm-twig (as his signature). [Targ. Is. LX, 21 דחרותי eed. Ven., read דחדותי, v. חדוא.]-- Pl. חרותאא, חרוו׳. B. Bath. 101b דעביד ח׳ כי להו he makes the burial caves like palm-twigs (in the shape of a fan). חרז (b. h.) [to bore holes, to carry thread through a hole] 1) to squeeze into. Cant. R. to I, 10 (ref. to בחרוזים ib.) וכ׳ צואריהם שחורזים (not שחוזרין) who squeeze their necks (through window holes, open doors &c.) to hear . the words of the Law (v. Yoma 35b; Ber. 6b; v. דוהקא); Yalk. ib. 983 וכ׳ אחרי חוזרים שהם (read; אחורי חורזים). -- 2) to string. Ex. R. s. 20 וכ׳ וח׳ ישב he sat down and strung (assorting) the larger peals separately &c. -- Part. pass. הרו, pl. חרוזים, חרוזין. Cant. R. . c. [read:] ע׳ אלו וכ׳ כליניא אחריהם חרוזים שהיו זקנים (v. Yalk. l. c.) those are the seventy elders who were strung (arranged) be- hind them (Moses and Aaron) like a string of pearls. -- Hull. 95b בחרוזין (Ar. חריזים, noun) if the pieces of meat are strung together. Lam. R. to V, 13 ח׳ .. . מאות ג׳ וכ׳ three hundred children were found strung up on the branches of one tree. -- Trnsf. to draw paralles between Biblical passages, to explain one passage by another. Cant. R. l. c. וכ׳ וחורז יושב הייתי I was sitting and comm- paring verses of the Pentateuch, and Pentateuch with Prophets &c. - Ib. וכ׳ חורזים שהיו; Yalk. l. c. חוזרים (corr. acc ). Cant. חרז ch. same, 1) to sting, perforate. Yeb. 75b top וכ׳ ססילוא חרזיה a thorn wounded him &c. Ab. Zar. 28b ול׳ ודחרזיה זיבורא he who suffers from the sting of a. wasp, or of a thorn. -- 2) to string beads; trnsf. to comipare verses (v. preced.). Cant. R. to I, 10 וכ׳ למיחרוז דידע אית some know how to string but not how to bore pearls, i. e. some know how to bring on parallels without hav- ing the ability to enter into the depth of a subject.
