כעוס m. (part. pass. of כעס) an excited serpent. Sabb. 62b (play on תעכסנה, Is. III, 16) בכ׳ כארס . . . ומכניסות they caused lust to seize their (the men's) hearts (as hot as) as the venom of the excited serpent; (older eds. נחש כארס כעוס; Ms. O. עכנה של כא׳, Ms. M. בנעורת כאש); Yoma 9b; Yalk. Is. 264. -- V. כעס.
כעירות f. (כער) ugliness, repulsiveness. Y. Gitt. IX, end, 50d כ׳ לידו מביאה עצמה היא אוף even this very thing (neglect of toilet)will make her repulsive(in her husband's eyes); Sifra M'tsora, end (איבה לידי הדבר נכנס). Esth. R. to I 3 (opp. נוי).
כעך m., pl. כעכים, כעכע=)כעכין,transpos. ofעכע, formed liike כסך; cmp.ככא) [eeth,] pronged and lengthy unleaven- ed cakes. Tosef. Hall. כען (contr. of כעידן, v. כרון) now. Targ. O. Num. XXIV, 4; 6 (Y. כדון, h. text עתה). Targ. II Sam. III, 8 מכ׳ (h. text היום); a. fr. -- Cant. R. to I, 1 וכ׳ כ׳ ברם הוינא כד הוינה I was (king) when I was, but now I am no more.

כעס (b. h.) [to be dark, hot, cmp. חמץ,; 1) to be angry. displeased. Ber. 61b top, v. ככד III. Tem. 16a (play on עכסה) וכ׳ על כועס .. . כל whoever saw her became displeas- ed with his own wife. Ned. 22a, a. fr. הכועס כל whoever allows himself to be carried away by his wrath. Ex. R. s. 45 וכ׳ על שכעסה מטרונה a matron (queen) that was angry with the king's daughter; a. fr. -- Part. pass. כעום, f כעוסה; pl. כעוסים, כעוסות. Ib. וכ׳ כ׳ פניך כשיהיו when thou shalt be angry, I shall conciliate thee &c.; (Tanh. Ki Thissa 27 בכעס אני כשאהיה); a. e. -- V. כעוס. -- a*2) to grow hot in the stomach, to ferment, swell. Gitt. 70a מליאה על תעמוד לכשתכעוס Ar. (ed. מילואך) when it (the food) swells, it will just fill the capacity of thy stomach. Hif. הכעיס to provoke to anger. Deut. R. s. 3. עתידים שהם אותי להכעיס that they are going to provoke me (through idolatry). Ab. V, 2 וכ׳ מכעיסין היו were constanlly pro- voking (the Lord). Snh. 27a, a. fr. להכעיס in a spirit of defiance, v. מומר; a. fr. - Imper. אכעיס (for הכעיס). Ruth R. end (ref. to Ps. IV, 5) תחטא ולא יצרך א׳. . . יצרך ארגיז let thy tempter rage, but sin not; but the Rabbis say, arouse thy (good) inclination to indignation, and thou shalt not sin. [Midr. XXXVIII, 15 אפין כעיסת angry -looking, morose (h. text. פניה כסתה); prob. a. corrupt. of שיאת, and רחים, at the end of the sentence, to be read חכים; cmp. Gen. R. s. 85]. Af. אכעס to provoke to anger; קדם (עובדא) א׳ to act provokingly, defiantly against. Targ. Y. II Deut. XXXII, 19. Ib. 21. -- Esth. R. introd. וכ׳ עובדיהון . . . מדאכעסו when the beloved children (Israel) defied &c.; (Yalk. Esth. 1044; Yalk. Job 920 ארגיזו).
כעס m. (b. h.; preced.) anger, grief. Tosef. Yeb. VI, 6 מבעלה כ׳ לה היה if she had been living on bad terms with her husband; Yeb. 42b; Keth. 60b בעלה בבית; Erub. 47a ב׳ עם. Ex. R. s. 45 וכ׳ בכ׳ כשאהיה, v. כעס. Ab. IV, 18 עעסו בשעת . . . אל do not try to pacify thy neighbor while he is excited. Sifre Num. 157, v. כלל; a. fr.
כעסא ch. same. Targ. Y. II Deut. XXXII, 19. Ib. 27.
כער, כאר (cmp. כעס) to be dark, ugly, repulsive (cmp. אוכמא). -- Part. pass. כעור, כאור; f כעורה; pl. כעורים, כעורין; כעורות, כא׳ a) ugly, ungainly. Gen. R. s. 36 כ׳ . . . לפיכך ומפוהם therefore shall this man (thou) be ugly and black. B. Kam. IX, 4 (100b) כ׳ צבעו, v. כלכוס. Esth. R. to I, 12 כ׳ אותי רואין אם if they find me ungainly. Cant. R. to V, 11; a. fr. -- b) unbecoming, indecent. Y. Keth. VII, 31c top תצא הדבר כא׳ that is indecent conduct, and cause for divorce; (Yeb. 24b, sq. מכוער). Gen. R. s. 60 וכ׳ לאיש שכ׳ for it is unbecoming for a man to walk behind a woman. -- c) (cmp. חור) not evident, strange, implausible.
