כריתות f. (b. h. כריתת; preced.) final divorce. Sifre Deut. 269 (ref. to Deut. XXIV, 1) אין . ... מכאן כורת שיהא כ׳ זה he must make the thing final, from this we derive that if a man says, this is thy letter of divorce under the condition that thou wilt never go . .m .v ., this is no final (valid) divorce; Gitt. 83b. Tosef. ib. IX (VII), 1; a. fr. -- Gitt. l. c.; ib. 21b; Succ. 24b, a. e. כ׳ כרת the legal deduc- tion from the use of the word כריתות (Deut, l. c.) where the word כרת might have been used.

כרך (cmp. כרה) to encircle, twine around, embrace, wrap. Men. 39a רובה שכ׳ תכלת a fringe the larger portion of which he twined together (v. תכלת). Ib. שיכרוך כדי וכ׳ וישנה enough to twine around three times. Yoma 38a כרכה embraced it (clung to the bronze door). Sabb. 133b נאין בשיראין וכרכהו Ms. M. (ed. וכורכו) and twine hand- some ribbons around it. Pes. 115a; Zeb. 79a וכ׳ כורכן היה used to wrap them together (insert the Passover meat and the bitter herb between the Matsah). Ab. Zar. 18a וכ׳ בסת כרכוהו they wrapped him in a scroll of the Law and burned him. Tosef.Meg.IV (III), 20 וכ׳ כורכיתורה you may wrap the Pentateuch in covers intended for &c.; (Meg. 27a נוללין); a. fr. -- Pes. IV, 8; Tosef. ib. II (III), 19 שמע את כורכין they recited the confession of faith (Deut. VI, 4 sq.) in one לרך, without the proper pauses (or with- out inserting 'Blessed be the Name of His glorious king- dom &c.' between verses 4 and 5), v. Pes. 56a, a. Y. ib. IV, 31b. - Part. pass. כרוך, f. כרוכה; ppl. כרוכים, כרוכין; כרוכות twined around, wrapped up; trnsf. (with אחר) clinging to, running after. Ber. V, 1וכ כ׳ נחש אפי׳ even if a serpent is wound around his heel, he must not interrupt his prayer, v. כריכה. Kidd. 66a וכ׳ ומונהת כ׳ הרי behold it (the Law) is wrapped up and lies in the corner, whoever wishes may study it. Gen. R. s. 78 מהלך אני כ׳ בפנים I shall walk with my face wrapped up (in humility). -- Hull. 78b (expl. Lev. XXII, 28) אחריו כ׳ שבנו מי that animal to whom the young clings (the mother). Sabb. 52a כרוכין with the chain or halter twined around them, opp. נמשכין led by the chain &c. Hull. 59b כרוכות (קרנים) horns the layers of which encircle one another. Ex. R. s. 33 בזה זה כ׳ היו their bodies were twisted around each other; a. e. Nif. נכרך to be twined around; to be wrapped up. Y. Ter. VII, 46b bot. בסדינ המת יכרך shall the dead be wrapped up in his sheet?, i.. e. shall that man be abandoned to his fate? -- Yoma 69a וכ׳ תכרך שמא lest one thread wind itself arout d (stick to) his body. כרך m. (preced. wds.) 1) twining. Men. 39a כ׳ של חוט the thread which is used for twining (v. תכלת). -- 2) roll, volume (of a book). B. Mets. 29b אחד בכ׳ קורין ג׳ יהיו ולא Ms. M. (differ. in ed.) three persons must not read to- gether in one volume (of a book held in trust by the finder). -- 3) bundle; trnsf. a combined action; אחד בכ׳ simultaneously; without intermission.
