שתל m. (preced.) set, plant. - Pl. שתלים, שתלין, שות׳. Maasr. V, 1 וכ׳ שלו מתוך ש׳ העוקר if one takes plants out of his own garden to set them in his own, he is exempt from tithes; Tosef. ib. שתם m. (preced.) one known to be skilled in boring and stealing wine. Tosef. Ab. Zar. VII (VIII), 14 אצל יין וכ׳ הש גוי ed. Zuck. (oth. ed. מהסתם, הסתמם, corrupt. of המשתם) if one deposited wine with a gentile who is known as an expert borer, it is forbidden &c. (v. נסך).
שתן, Hif השתין (b. h.; sec. r. of שין, Ges. Thes. s. v.), with, or sub. מים, to urinate. Bekh. 44b מים להשתין כיקש ה׳ ולא needed to make water, and forewent it. Sabb. 67b (a superstitious custom) וכ׳ בפני המשחנת who urinabes before her pot that it may boil quickly; a. fr.

שתף, PKשתף(Shaf.ofתף; cmp. Assyr. tappq, Del. Assyr. Handw. p. 712) to oin, combine, attach; to form a partner- ship. Y. Taan. II, 65d בישראל . . . שי׳ the Lord combin- ed his great name with Israel's (ישרראל). Ib. אני הרי וכ׳ משתף I will have my great name bound up with theirs, that they may live. Snh. 63a וכ׳ שמים שם המשתף כל he who combines the name of God with something else (imparting divine honor to God and a material oject at the same time) will be uprooted from the world; Succ. 45b. Ib. וכ׳ משתף קא והא Ms. M. (ed. משתתף, corr. acc.) but (in saying, 'unto Yah and unto thee, O altar) does not one combine the name &c. ? Ber. 63a . . המשתף כל וב׳ בצערו as for him who includes the name of God in the expression of his trouble(blesses God in his calamity), his means of support will be doubled. Ex. R. s. 42 (ref. to Ex. Noah 13 (Satan said to Noah) זה בכרם שנינו ונשתחף בא come and let us work together in this vineyard; a. e. -- Esp. (Sabbath law) to form a fictitious partnership in an alley (מבוי) by depositing in it some food to the expense for which the inmates of the buildings concerned contribute, contrad. to laying an erub (עירוב). EErub. 71b להשתתם . . . ביין במבוי משתתפפין וכ׳ the partnership in an alley is formed with wine, but if some wish to do it with bread, they may do so. Ib. במבוי ומשתתפין בחצירות מערבין you must lay an erub for courts (by depositing a common obbject in one of the courts), and also form a partnership for the alley; או משתתפין או מערבין you may do the one or the other.
