For his services on the north coast of Spain, as first lieutenant of the " Arethusa," he had conferred upon him the rank of lieutenant- colonel in the Spanish service. Having had the property of Myrecairnie, in Fifeshire, left to him, he retired from the navy as com- mander, at the conclusion of the war, 1815. He subsequently purchased the property of Vellore, Linlithgowshire, and m. 1817, Helen, daughter of Thomas Littlejohn, Esq. of Stir- ling, N.B., having had issue by her seven sons and seven daughters, viz., I.
