He first bought Bolac Plains from Mr. Robert Anderson and afterwanls in 1856 Merrang from the executors of the late Adolphus Sceales. Mr. Hood took au active interest in all local affairs, being President, and for several years a member of the Warrnamboolshire Council ; and after- wards a member of the Mortlakeshire Council. He was also for many years con- nected with the Warrnambool Racing Club, ami took an interest in coursing, hiuiting and other sports. As a breeder and successful exhibitor of Lincoln sheep, Mr. Hood was well known. He was one of the first to import a stud ilock of tliis breed. He was one of the originators of the " Long WooUed Association " of Victoria, the shows of ivliich were held at Hexham, and of which he was President for the first four years. This was merged in the " Australian Siu^ep-Brccders Association " of Australasia, and removed to Mclliourne. Of this society Mr. Hood was Vice-President since its start, and once Presi- dent. The JoEDANS are an old Devonshire family and possessed a considerable estate in Dart- moor, near Widdicombe, which still bears the family name, *' Jordans," but which many years ago passed into Chancery. The late RiOHAKD JoKDAN, a great mituralist and the pro])rietor of a bank at Tcignmouth, Devon- shire ; W. Risden-Jordan, solicitor, of Teign- moutli ; and Dr. Charles Jordan, of Birming- ham, are of this family. The Rev. John Jobdan, a Wesleyau minister, son of John Joedan,* of Trolvas, Pcnryn, co. Cornwall, England, m. Elizabeth Jeffebies (who d. at Luton, co. Bedford, in 1854), and d. at Camellord, co. Cornwall, iu 1829, having had issue, I. Joliii, )". first, Elizabeth, daughter of Johu Waller, of Luton, co. Bedford ; and secondly, Eliza, daughter of James Bickertos, and had issue.
- John Jordan's great-uncle, John Beard (one of the most eminent of English tenors, for
whom Handel composed the tenor parts in the " Messiah," " Israel in Egypt," " Jepthah," " Judas," and " Samson "), in. Lady Henrietta, only daughter of James, first Earl of Walde- grave. She was the widow of Lord Edivard Herbert, second son of the Marquis of Powis, by whom she had one daughter, Barbara, who in. lier kinsman, Henry Arthur, Lord Herbert, of Cherbury, who was created Earl of Powis (see Bukke's Peerage).
