In 178S, owing to a dis- pute with the Admiralty, he entered the service of the Brabant Patriots, but shortly after returned to the British seiTice. He was resident com- missioner in Corsica, in Elba, ami at Lisbon, and at Port Malum, .Minorca, and afterwards at Halifax and Sheer- ness ; promotet.1 rear-admiral April, 1804; viee-adn.iral 2Sth April, 1808; anrl adndral llh June, 1814. He was M.P. for Uchester from 1818 to 1826. He was created a baronet Kith June, 1804 ; he assumed by royal licence dated 15th February, 1811, the addi- tional surname and arms of Queenly, but rehnqui-shed thai name in March, 1813. He )H. The third son, Major-Gteneral John Coffin, of New- Brunswick, b-iptised at Holy Trinity Clim-ch, Boston, 1756, served for some time in the uav V, and gained his cammission in rlie array at Bunker's Hill, 1775, was in command of the cavalry of the British force at Kutaw Springs, on the 8th Seplembcr, 1781. and served with great distinction in the b.ittles of the American war. During the disastrous period immediately succeeding he took refuge in Charlestown, where he married, and subse- quently settled at St. John, New Brunswick, and was afterwards Colouel of the New Brunswick Fencibles, and was promoted major general in 1815. He m. in 1781, at St. John's Island, Charlestowu, Ann, daugh- ter of William MATruEWs, of St. Julin's Island, Sjuth Carolina, and d. 12th May, 1838, buried at St. Peter's, Westrield, Neripis, New Bi-uuswick, having by her (who d. 1839, and was buried at Waleot, co. Somerset) had issue, I. Guy Carleton, General, Royal Arlil- lery, bajitiscd at Fredcrickton, New Brunswick, 1785 ; in. fir.st, a daugliter of Walkeu, of the E.l.C Ser- vice ; she d. 1818-51, and was buried in Brussels.
