Oxford, purchased ieaseliold land at Coate bj iudenlure dated 1st May, Iti'U; was referred to as "Black Williams " in a public book called " the Book of the Sixteens," belonging to the land- owners of Aston and Coate in IGfiS, and was stated to hi < omniojily called " Black John Williams," in a lease dated 28th September, 1670. (Administration of his estate was granted to liis widow, Anne Williams, 7th November, 1* 78, by the Consistory Court at Oxford). He had issue, a son, John Williams, of Coate and sometime of Aston, botli in the parish of Bampton, co. Oxford, who pni-chased freehold lands in 1654, and was buried at B;irapton, 25th Oclober, 1693. His will, dated 20th October, 1603, Avas proved at Oxford, 6th NoTember ollowing. By Martha, his wife (wlio ni. before 1670), he had issue,* I. John, of Coate, m. at Bampton, 7th November, 1700, Mary, daughter of Thomas Hale, of Coate, by Deborah, his wife, and had issue. II. Eichard, m. Heborah Hancer, of Eisboro', co. Bucks (who d. 2.'jth April, 1758, aged 60, and was buried in the Meeting Hou.se burial ground at Coate), and d. 16th August, 1740, agerl 69, having had amongst other issue, 1. Richard, aged 12 years in 1728. 2. John, of Coate, aforesaid and afterwards of Old Shifford, in the parish of Bampton, h. 14th Au- gust, 1725, »«. first. Hannali Col- LETT ; secondly, Jfary Selman' ; and thirdly, at Bampton, 26th September, 1775, Mary, daughter of John EiDGE, of Bampton, and d. Mst January, 1801, hav- ing by his third wife (who(i. 9th November, 1837, aged 92, and Tvas buried in the Meeting House burial ground at Coate) had with other issie, Tiolefta, whow^as h. 16t]i June, 1776; m. at Old Shifford, 24th March, 1800, her first cousin, Thomas Williams, sometime of Camden Hill, Kejitington, London, and afterw^ards of Cowley Grove, Hillingdon, grandfather of the Hon. J. S. WiUiams, of New Zealand. III. James, of whom jjresently. The third son, James Williams, of Aston, parish of Bampton, co. Oxfoi-d, baptised at Bampton, 1st January, 1674 ; m. in 1700, Mary, youngest daughter of John Williams, the younger, of C'oate (whose will, dated 10th May, 1687, was proved at Oxford, 1,5th June, following, by Hannah, his widow), and granddaughter of John Williams, the elder, of Coate (n'liose will, dated 6th October, 1682, was proved at Oxford, 21st M:iy, 1685) ; and d. 1728, having by her had issue, I. The third and youngest son, Benjamin Williams, of Coate, b. 1718; m. first, Mary Hrxr, of High Wycombe, co. Bucks, and by her (who d. 19th August, 1760) had I. Samuel, of wliom presently. II. James, d. in New York. I. Elizabeth, 4. July, 1741 ; m. Thomas Coombe, of Coate (wlio d. 17th Feb- ruary, 1819, aged 87), and d. s.p. 17th January, 1828, aged 87. II. Mary, m. William Petty, and rf. 8th October, 1773. He d. 27th Sep- tember, 1794. III. Ann, m. John Hughes, of Bristol, (who d. 1 7th October, 1808) , d. 3rd and was buried at the burial ground Brunswick Square, Bristol, 9th Oc- tober, 1S28 aged 83, having had issue. IV. Martha, nnm. 1783. V.
