The thu'd son, Sib Henry Montagu, was one of the representatives of the City of Loudon in the parliament called by James I., upon his accession (19th March, 1604), and acquired great distinction as a parliamentary orator. In 1616 he was appointed Lord Chief Justice of the court of King's Bench ; in 1620, con- stituted Lord Treasurer of England ; and elevated, 19th December, in the same year, to the peerage, as Baron Montagu, of Xim- bolton, and Viscount Manuetille. Upon the accession of Charles I., his loidship was advanced (5th Eebruary, 1626) to an earl- dom, as Earl of Manciiesiee ; and subse- quently appointed Lord Pi'ivy Seal. He m. first, Catherine, second daughter of Sir Wil- liam Spencer, of Yarnton, in Oxfordshire, third son of Sir John SrENCER, of Althorp, and had issue, I. Edward, ancestor of the Dukes of Manchester (see Burke's Peerage). II. Walter, who having embraced the Catholic religion, retired into a monas- tery in France ; and attracting the notice of the queen-mother, Mary de Medicis, was received into the especial favour of that princess, and eventually appointed by her, abbot of St. Martin's Abbey, near Poutoise, in the diocese of Rouen. He was also of lier cabinet council and the chief instrument of introducing Cardinal Mazarin to Her Majesty. In 1G13 he was a]>prehended at Rcchcstcr, coming to England with lettei's ofi mportance, and lie remained in confinement in that country until 1647, wlien he was banished the kingdom by a vote of parliament.
