He d. intestate and administration was gi'anted 10th September, 1768, as next of kin, to his brother, Robert Martin, of Birch Hall, Dangar, and Balliuahinch Castle, Lord of Clare, i. 1714, took out a Protestant ceitificate to hold his estates, but was neTcrtheless the active head of the Roman Catholic party in West Connaught, and a strong Jacobite and a remarkable swordsman {see Burke's Con- navght Circnit). The eldest son, Richard Martin, of Dangan and Bal- liuahinch Castle, Li rd of Clare, called " Humanity," for many years M.P. for Galway, J.P., high sheriff co. Galway, 1782. He was the well-know^n and benevolent author of the Act for the prevention of cru- elty to animals, called " Dick Martin's Act," and was the principal founder of the Royal Society for that purpose {see Dictionary of National Biographg). He was Colonel of the Galway Volunteers, and of his troop of Yeomanry, and was the first of the family educated in the Protestant religion, due to his father's desire that he should enter Parli iment to work for the emancipation of the Catholics, which he did. He was b. February, 1754, and m. first, 8th February, 1777, Elizabeth, daughter of George Veset, of Lucan, co. Dublin, son of the Right Hon. Agmon-lisham Vesey, and grandson of the Archbishop of Tuani, and by her had issue, I. St. George, b. 1778, d. aged 14. II. Thomas Barnewall, of Dangan and Ballinaliineh Castle, Lord of Clare, M.P. for Galway, J.
