The hold which England maintains over the fortress is w1l expressed in the inscription placed over the portico of t.he main guard-house in the centre of the city:—

“MAGN’E ET 1NVi(1’E BRTTANNICE METmNsIut AMOR ET EUROPE ‘.OX I-lAS INSULAS CONFIRMANT. A.1). 1814.”[1]
