The account of the grand-priors previous to the commencement of the fourteenth century is very incomplete and unsatisfactory. Very probably the names of many of the conventual priors of St. John of Clerkenwell are mixed up with them. The following list is given as they occur in the Cott. MSS., as far as the name of William de Tottenham. From him to the conclusion of the roll the vouchers are to be found in the “Libri Bullarum,” in the Record Office at Malta. I. GARNIER DR NEAPOLIS. Is the first recorded grand-prior of England. 2. RIcHARD DR TURK. Was living in the time of the first prioress of Buckland, who is said to have held that dignity for sixty years. 3. RALPH DE DYNIIAM, or DINNT. 4. GILBERT DE VE1IE. He bestowed on the dames of Buckland a pension of a hundred crowns, charged upon his manor of Raisiham. 5. HUGH D’ALNETO, or Dxirr. 6. ALAN. Afterwards bishop of Bangor; was probably only conventual prior of Clerkenwell. 7. ROBERT THE TREASURER. 8. TuRonouc DR NussA, or NyssA. 9. ROBERT DR MAUNEBY. 10. ROBERT DR VERB. Was witness, as conservator of the Hospital, in a charter, dated Acre, 19th I)ecember, 1262. He gave to the church of Clerkenwell, in 1269, one of the six water-pots in which the water was changed into wine at the marriage of Cana in Galilee. As prior he visited the convent of Buckland, to arrange some diputes, and died 15th February, 1270. 11. PrnER DR H0cEHAM. Named in a bull of Pope Boniface VIII., A.n. 1295. 12. SIMON BOCARD. 13. Gained possession of the preceptories of QuenyngtonSchenegaye, and other lands and tenements.
