അ
അ a. Found in Tdbh's before initial ര, ല, as അരക്കര്‍, അരങ്ങു; — passes easily into the sound of എ, as ചെടയന്‍ from ജട, തെചമി = ദശമി. The final അ has often the character of a palatal vowel and corresponds with T. ഐ, C. എ. f.i. തല, തലയില്‍, തലെക്കു; പറ, പറെഞ്ഞു.
I. അ a 5. pron. That, yonder. (The corres- ponding pron. signifies this, as in (അത:, അത്ര.) Hence : അവന്‍, അത്; അക്കര, അപ്പുറം, അപ്പോലെ (and അതുപോലെ). Before vowels അയ്യാള്‍ that man, അവ്വിടം that place. It is also used for the second person as (അദ്ദേഹം that person, you (comp. അങ്ങു). II.
