4. The svarabhakti Vowel.
§ 43,1. From what for the present purpose is called the svar. vowel there must be distinguished the vocal element of sonant liquids, an incident not treated of here beyond the marking of occurrences in phonetic script as they arise. j
The svar. vowel seems a metathesis of the liquid sonants 1, n, r before labials and gutturals. There are no examples of occurrence before guttural L as this assimilates with 1, n, r. Neither of m and the gutturals surd and sonant as those com- bine with nto x. Also m becomes m before a labial with one exception of Banba, a name for Ireland, which is always scanned trisyllabic in the poetry. Henee m makes svar. only before guttural and labial spirants. Instances of the following oceur:—
