RAMCOMUL SEN gave a work of great research, the result of 15 years* labor, in 1834, a translation of Todd and - Johnson, containing the meaning in Bengali of 58,000 English words, it cost Rs. 50 a copy, " a perfect chaos of materials for future lexicographers," and an example of equal industry, with Radhakant's famous Sanskrit Dictionary. MORTON'S - DICTIONARY, was published in 1828, pp. 600, Rs. 6 with Bengali Synonims and an English translation— it is very valu- able, containing 10,700 words, it omits however all exotics. JOY GOPAL'S PERSIAN AND BENGALI DICTION- ARY, 1838, 2,500 words, has fallen with the decay of the Persian language. In 1838, two Persian and Bengali Vocabu- laries were published. One by Lakhmi Narayan, Sudar Amin of Purnea, he wished to substitute Bengali for Persian terms in the Court, and gave 200 copies of his work with this view to . Government, for distribution in the zillahs, but the rapid decay of the Persian renders them almost useless now, except for Court terms. In 1838 Jagannath Mallik a zemindar, published Lis Shabdakalpa Tarangini, b. m. p. The same year JAGANA- RAYAN SHARMA published a Dictionary, pp. 435, 16,000 words, excluding all exotics. In 1839, RATNA HALDAR, in order to teach the correct spelling of words, published Banga- bhidhan, pp. 102, an alphabetical list of 6,264 Sanskrit words used in Bengali. The same year R AMES H WAR TARKA- LANKAR published a Dictionary of 18,000 words, pp. 473, 24mo. In 1840, A VOCABULARY OF SCRIPTURE PRO- . PER NAMES, b. m. p., English and Bengali, pp. 200, . appeared ; the names are spelled according to the Arabic mode ana not according to the Hebrew. It was designed to form the basis of an uniform method of spelling the proper names of Scripture in the language of India. In 1840, JAGANARA- YAN MUKARJYEA, published a Dictionary of 12,000 words, p. c. p., pp. 120, excluding exotics. In 1845, W. Morton published a BIBLICAL, THEOLOGICAL VOCA- BULARY, pp. 31, of 800 Bengali terms. 5. ADEA'S ANGLO BENGALI DICTIONARY, Roz. & Co.., 1854, pp. 761, 5 Rs M 23,000 words.
