This system of teach- ing the Bengali alphabet and reading according to the Pestallo- - zian system,' has effected wonders in the Krisnnaghur district, enabling children to learn the Bengali in less than half the usual time, and giving them a view of the nature of sound and of the organs of speech that must tend very much to enlarge their mind. The "book is used in various schools now, and with eminent success. Even the old teachers admit the advantages it gives in learning the language over the old monotonous rote system : the children write every thing they read : the black board is used. 80 reading lessons are given to illustrate the application of the system of 'sounds as applied to vowels and consonants. 208.
