of the closest scrutiny. Note especially the gigantic pauldrons with their rectangular forms covering the shoulder blades, composed apparently of only three plates, below the lower edge of which appears the largely circumfranced sleeve of the chain mail shirt. Even on these great pauldrons, which are placed over the full pleated surcoat, there is on the left side attached an additional grand garde. To our modern eyes the head-piece, a huge-brimmed straw hat, lends a touch of humour to the otherwise dignified appearance of the saint.
