Scarcely had she crossed the sacred threshold, when stones closed the entrance, and she was left alone with her thoughts and with her God; and there perhaps will she remain till, at the day of judgement, angels open the gate that now separates her from the living.

At the top was a small grated window, through which the pious sent nourishment to her, and heaven its rays and its zephyrs. Wretched sinner!
