complete stability. It would thus appear, unless some previous records exist, that to M. Penaud belongs the credit of producing the first stable flight model of a type that may be regarded as an embryo flying machine. It is unfortunate that the particulars given are not sufficient to permit of the exact reproduction of the model and repetition of the experiments; there is, however, no reason to question the accuracy of the facts stated. Fig. 11 is a representation of a form of gliding model devised by Mons. J. Pline, and figured in Marey's "Vol des Oiseaux"; this model appears to have been stable in flight, but from an aerodynamic standpoint it is not a form of high efficiency, the
