TO MY BROTHER CHI-KUEH

born 1907 and killed in the bombing of Chungking in the spring of 1940, just as a new Road to Life opened up before him with its promise of the freedom and independence to which he was stranger all his life, I dedicate these translations of Lusin whom we both admired above all other Chinese writers, ancient and modern, and who did more than any one else to clear the Road to Life of the weeds of tradition and of the traps and pitfalls that man-eating men set for the young, the unwary, and the helpless.
