Early in the spring of 1870, the business men of Rockford, proud of their ball team, and recognizing how much it had done in the way of advertising that enterprising young city, raised a purse of $7,000 that the Forest City Club might make the first tour ever made by a Western amateur Base Ball club to the Eastern States and match their playing ability with that of the strong nines of that section.
