with rounded, spiral ridges. Sometimes imbricated with small scales (form named inibricata Lamarck, pi. 256). Color usually dull-white, but sometimes yellowish, orange or brownish. Rarely with dark-brown or blackish spiral bands. This species has also been known as Nucella lapillus. For biology see H. B. Moore (1936 and 1938).

Thais lamellosa Gmelin Bering Straits to Santa Cruz, California. Frilled Dogwinkle Figures 48e-h I % to 5 inches in length, solid, usually with a fairly high, pointed spire. Columella almost vertical and straight, not flattened. Size, details of shape, sculpturing and color very variable. White, grayish, cream or orange, some- times spirally banded. Smoothish or with variously developed foliated, axial ribs. Sometimes spinose. A very common rock-loving species. Formerly Purpura crispata Martyn.
