But let us proceed to the main object. My intention is, to make the British public acquainted with a Prohibitory Index of Rome of the most recent date, and of which I am happy to have become a possessor. Its title is — Index". Romæ, mdcccxxxv. Ex Typographia Reverendæ Cameræ Apostolicæ, Cum Summi Pontificis Privilegio. After the old Preface of Benedict XIV., follows what alone of prefatory matter is peculiar to this edition — Catholico Lectori Fr. Thomas Antoninus Degola Ordinis Prædicatorum Sac. Congregationis Indicis Secretarius. After one paragraph of not the most elegant Latin, the secretary satisfies himself with repeating what a former secretary, Ricchinius, had prefixed to an edition of the Index in 1758; and he closes with announcing a Mandate of Leo XII. in 1828, and a Monitum of the S.
