11 And Josias held the passover in Jerusalem unto his Lord, and offered the passover the fourteenth day of the first month;

1 And Josiah kept a passover unto the Lord in Jerusalem: and they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.

2 having set the priests according to their daily courses, being arrayed[1] in their vestments, in the temple of the Lord.

2 And he set the priests in their charges, and encouraged them to the service of the house of the Lord.
|
|
3 And he spake unto the Levites, the temple-servants[2] of Israel, that they should hallow themselves unto the Lord, to set the holy ark of the Lord in the house that king Solomon the son of David had built: and said, 4Ye shall no more have need to bear it upon your shoulders: now therefore serve the Lord your God, and minister unto his people Israel, and prepare you after your fathers' houses and kindreds,

3 And he said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the Lord, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; there shall no more be a burden upon your shoulders: now serve the Lord your God, and his people Israel.

5 according to the writing of David king of Israel, and according to the magnificence[3] of Solomon his son: and standing in the holy place according to the several divisions of the families of you the Levites, who minister in the presence of your brethren the children of Israel,

4 And prepare yourselves after your fathers' houses by your courses, according to the writing of David king of Israel, and according to the writing of Solomon his son. 5 And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the fathers' houses of your brethren the children of the people, and let there be for each a portion of a fathers' house of the Levites.

6 offer the passover in order, and make ready the sacrifices for your brethren, and keep the passover according to the commandment of the Lord, which was given unto Moses.

6 And kill the passover, and sanctify yourselves, and prepare for your brethren, to do according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

7 And unto the people which were present Josias gave thirty thousand lambs and kids, and three thousand calves: these things were given of the king's substance, according as he promised, to the people, and to the priests and Levites.

7 And Josiah gave to the children of the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all of them for the passover offerings, unto all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king's substance.

8 And Helkias, and Zacharias, and Esyelus[4], the rulers of the temple, gave to the priests for the passover two thousand and six hundred sheep, and three hundred calves.

8 And his princes gave for a freewill offering unto the people, to the priests, and to the Levites. Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, the rulers of the house of God, gave unto the priests for the passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen.

9 And Jeconias, and Samaias, and Nathanael his brother, and Sabias, and Ochielus, and Joram, captains over thousands, gave to the Levites for the passover five thousand sheep, and seven hundred calves.

9 Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethanel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, the chiefs of the Levites, gave unto the Levites for the passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen.

Josiah's passover and death, the last kings of Judah, and the exile. Ch. i. = 2 Chron. xxxv. seq. (cf. 2 Kings xxiii. 21–xxv. 30 and the relevant portions of Jeremiah), cf. Jos. Ant. x. 4 5–xi. 7 (who uses the canonical books, including Daniel, E, and unknown sources). The whole chapter when compared with MT and G of Chron. and Kings furnishes an instructive illustration of the methods and merits of the translator.
- ↑ arrayed (ἐστολεισμένους), cf. v. 59, vii. 9. Perhaps an Aramaizing mistranslation (Nestle, 24).
- ↑ temple-servants, mg. the Nethinim, a misreading of MT חַמְּבִינִים. Note the indirect narration in E and Chron. G.
- ↑ magnificence (μεγαλειότητα), GL (cf. S) and Chron. GBA διὰ χειρός, perhaps interpreted 'by the might'. Charles conj. צל יְרֵי for MT במבתב (a repetition of בתב), misread in E as בנרל (private communication).
The paraphrastic 5–7 represent a rather different MT. - ↑ Esyelus (GL 'Joel'), mg. Jehiel (after MT); perhaps Haziel is intended (Fr., Guthe; cf. 1 Chron. xxiii. 9).
