  1. Kereſoun, Arrowſmith-Ghirecin, or Kereſontas, Laurie's chart.
  2. Pliny, St. ]erome, and one of the Sophiſts in Athenaeus, ſpeak of the cherry-tree as being firſt brought into Italy from the town of Ceraſus, in Pontus. But it was well known in Greece at the time of Theophraitus, who deſcribes it accurately, and at length, and calls it by the name of κέρασος. The perſon likewiſe, who anſwers the Sophiſt in Athenaaus, ſays, that Diphilus, who lived in the time of Lyſimachus, had deſcribed the fruit by name, and given an account of its qualities. It appears from Servius, that the tree was known in Italy before the time of Lucullus, but that be introduced a better kind from Aſia Minor. Caſaubon thinks, that the place received its name from the fruit, and the obſervation of Tournefort, cited here, gives probability to this conjecture.
  3. This was a promontory, now called Kara Bouroun, or the Black Cape, perhaps for the ſame reaſons as Acra Melæna was ſo called.
