birth of ΘΔΧ, its sixth society. In 1848, ΦΓΔ originated at Jefferson, now Washington and Jefferson College, where ΒΘΠ had established a chapter in 1842, ad in December of the same year, ΦΔΘ was founded at Miami, while ΛΔΦ and ΒΘΠ were temporarily inactive. During this year, also, the first distinctively Southern fraternity, the "W. W. W.," or "Rainbow," was founded at the University of Mississippi. Its name being English, and its nomenclature, symbols and customs being very similar to those of the Mystical Seven, previously mentioned, it is difficult to believe that its establishment is not due in some manner to the older society.

In 1849, ΔΦ placed a chapter at the University of Pennsylvania, and ΦΚΣ was founded there immediately thereafter; in 1852. ΦΚΨ originated at Jefferson; in 1854 the first of the three orders of ΧΦ made its appearance at Princeton; in 1855 ΣΧ arose at Miami, as the result of a split in the recently established chapter ΔΚΕ. This was the third fraternity originating at Miami, and these ΒΘΠ, ΦΔΘ and ΣΧ, from their home and birth-place called the "Miami Triad," spread over the West and South as the members of the Union Triad had spread over the Eastern States.

The second Southern fraternity, ΣΑΕ, was founded at the University of Alabama in 1856, after seven fraternities had established chapters there. In 1857, ΦΣ was founded at Lombard University, without any apparent resulting from opposition to any previously established society, and in 1858 ΣΔΠ was established at Dartmouth.
