CONSTRUCTION AND PUBLIC WORKS Base Maintenance |
Base maintenance is handled by the Public Works Department attached to Commander Service Force, Subordinate Command, SEVENTH FLEET. No CBMU as such are utilized at this base. Duties of the Public Works Officer are as follows: prepare and/or approve plans for all U.S. Navy construction, buildings, roads, graded areas and similar shore facilities. Exercise supervision and inspection over all such construction. Inspect, and supervise maintenance and repair over all roads, sewerage systems, utilities, waterfront structures, docking facilities, construction equipment, furniture and office equipment, towers, masts, and buildings under U.S. Navy cognizance in this area. Prepare, approve, undertake and inspect the camouflage of U.S. Naval shore facilities in conjunction with the defense camouflage committee of Western Australia. Maintenance of shop facilities ashore. Exercise supervision and cognizance over all transportation activities including maintenance, operation and repair of U.S.N. crawler and wagon cranes, trucks, automobiles, power driven mobile equipment. Personnel attached to the Public Works Department area as follows: 6 officers, 2 Warrant officers, 87 enlisted men and 23 civilians. Civiliam and Australian Government (State and Federal) facilities are available for reconstruction and base maintenance. |

Water Supply System |
Water supply for U.S. Naval activities in the Perth-Fremantle area is provided by the State operated water supply system. The system has a capacity of 35,000,000 gallons per day in this area. Two dams provide water storage for this area: The Canning Dam impounds 25,500,000 imperial gallons. The Mundaring Weir impounds 4,654,000,000 imperial gallons. The upkeep and operation of this water supply system is the responsibility of the State Government of Western Australia.
