UNSUNG.

Would now that we who battled were not dumb,
Who shared the dire communion of the strife
With those who died. Would there were living some
Could paint those greatest moments to the life.
Then as the page of ancient epic flames
With heroes canonized, the wise, the strong,
So these our recent days and later names
Would grow illustrious in modern song.
Surely the world is dull of heart and blind
Dismissing with so casual a glance
This bright inheritance of recent glory,
As though great deeds were to the past confined,
When Iliads yesterday were fought in France
And Odysseys that claim their place in story.
