The AbJiedi is a spiritual novel in which the hero seeks after knowledge of the soul and achieves it through self-mortification. The AdhyatmU;a is a humorous •work for the advancement of Temperance in which the conver- sation of different classes of people are very cleverly des- cribed. He wrote in both English and Bengali, the life of David Hare for w hom he had a great admiration ; both the works ■were very well received But his lusting work in Bengali literature is the 'Allaler Ghctrer DutaV In literary power and sense of humour it has been rarely surpassed in Bengali. In one respect it marked an important dej>arturt». Hitherto it had been customary to write good Bengali works in the learued stylo which is most akin to Snuskrit, and people began to think that no readable work could be wrigen in any other style. Pearichnnd with his usual keenness found that unless efforts were made to check this process of assimilation of the Bengali language to,Sanskrit, its separate, existence would be doubtful. Thus, with characteristic energy and boldness of Bpirit he wrote the book ' in simple Lengali. Thus Peariehand paved the wny for the creation of an independent Bengali literature and the hook is t« be praised more for, its historical worth than for its intrinsic excellence, which latter is, however, not to be ignored. The work has been translated into' English and also dramatised," * Having accomplished various other works of public utility he passed away in 1883 at the age of f59, mourned by a large circle of friends and admirers. Though a free-thinker, he learnt to respect ancient traditions, and often quoted the Hindu scrip- tures in a spirit of sympathy, He was renowned for cosmopoli- tanism and public usefulness.
