(2) The Pentateuch from Exodus to Numbers, whatever its authorship, has the form of a chronological register or registers. The author of Ex. 17:14, whoever he was, had clearly in mind such a book, as appears from the use of "memorial" or record (Zikkaron) which links both with the Book of the records of the words of days and with the "Recorder" of David.
