On November 24, 1959, at apprOleately 0535 c. s. t., a Lockheed Constellation, N 102R, Fllght 595, operated by Trans Jorld Alrllnes, Inc., crashed 1ntc a reel— dentlal area aoout one—fourth of a mile southeast of Mldway Airport, Chicago, llllncls, kllllng all persons aooard, demollshlng the aarcraft, and fatally ingurlng elght persons on the ground.

Fllght 595, loaded Hlth cargo, took off on runway 31L of Midway at approx1— mately 0531 c s t., November 24, I959, bound for Los Angeles, Salifornla. As the aircraft began a left turn, the crew notlfled Midway Tower the}' had reserved a flre warnlng on the No 2 englne and had shut 1t down. They also informed the toner the flight would return and land. The aircraft proceeded 1n a contlnulng left turn around the alrport 1n an elllptloal pattern and below the clouds whlch were based at an altitude of 500 to 600 feet.

In the turn to Elnal approach to runway 31 the alrcraft tanked an excess of £5 degrees durlng which 1t developed an exces51ve rate of sink. When the aircraft reached the tops of the trees 1ts wings were nearly level and 1ts nose was ralsed 1n a climbing attitude; hoaever, the descant contanued The wlng flaps were being retracted durlng the lass 5 to 10 seconds of the flnal descent and were found to he Synmwtrlcally extended at 24 percent upon impact.

It 15 the conclu51on of the Board that thls accident see the consequence of maneuvering the aircraft during the turn to final approach 1n such a nanoer as to cause a rate of sink from whlch recovery was not pos31ble.

Investlgatlon

Trans World Alrllnes Flight 595 of November 24, 1959, was a scheduled cargo flight from Mldway Alrport, Chicago, Illlnols, to Los Angelee, Californla, and the alrcraft ass1gned was a Constellatlon, model L—thgh, serlal number 1252, N 1043. Tue crew conslsted of Captain Claude Ellbert Felwlg, First Efflcer Delmas Earl Hatters, and Flight Englneer Aeraon Lyman Ange, Jr.

Flight 595 was scheduled to depart hlduay Alrport at OBlfil/fiovemher 24, 19593 however, departure was delayed by the inability of the ground crew to complete loadlng of the alrcraft because of a breakdown 1n loadlng equipment. as a result
