Simple John was a widow's son, and a course country weaver to his trade. He made nothing but such as canvass for caff-beds, corn and coal sacks, drugget and barn was the finest webs he could lay his fingers to; he was a great lump of a lang lean lad, aboon sax feet a fore he was aughteen year auld; and he said himsel, he grew sae fast, and was in sic a hurry to be high, that he did not stay to bring a' his judgment wi' him, and yet he hoped it would follow him, and as would meet wi't as mony a (illegible text) are married. He
