Painted in 1516-18 for the high altar of S. M. dei Frari, Venice, where it was first exposed to public view, March 20, 1518. So dimmed even in the 16th century by candle-smoke and other causes that Vasari says it could scarcely be seen. The French did not think it worth carrying to Pai'is.
